Birth and adoption
If you are adding a child to your family through birth or adoption, you may be able to add the child(ren) as a dependent to your Vanguard FlexCare plan. To determine eligibility for coverage, please review Dependent eligibility for FlexCare for more information.
Note: If you do not wish to make any changes to your FlexCare benefits as a result of your birth or adoption event, you do not need to report the event. Refer to Having a baby: Overview or Welcoming a child: Overview to view other considerations you should make when experiencing one of these events.
To make changes to your benefits, you must complete the following steps within the required timeline:
Step 1: Report your life event to Crew Central™ and submit your benefit election changes within 30 days of the event by following the View or change benefits job aid, selecting Birth/Adoption as the Benefit Event Type. Once you've entered your elections, review your confirmation carefully. Any discrepancies must be reported in writing to Crew Central by creating a case within 14 business days of submitting your elections.
Step 2: Provide acceptable proof of the qualified event. For example, submit a copy of either the souvenir hospital birth certificate or the state-issued birth certificate containing the child's name, date of birth, and at least the crew member's name. A copy of adoption documents are required if you are adopting a child. Include your name and crew ID.
- Electronically: You will be prompted to attach and submit your documentation to a Crew Central case after reporting your life event.
- By interoffice mail: Crew Central, Mailport M20.
- By U.S. mail: Vanguard, Attn: Crew Central, Mailport M20, P.O. Box 2600, Valley Forge, PA 19482-2600.
Note: Coverage for added dependent(s) will not be in effect until documentation has been received in good order and approved by Crew Central.
